FACTS LAW TRUTH JUSTICE Opposition to Assemblyman Corey Jackson’s (D-Distr. 60, Riverside) Assembly Bill 1078.

WHY?

Because this:

On June 21, 2023, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond’s and his new “education task force” served notice to districts that defy laws to honor student diversity.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Jackson’s claims that, under AB 1078, the State will only “issue guidance” helping school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, and school personnel “manage conversations about race and gender” and “review instructional materials to ensure that they represent diverse perspectives and are culturally relevant” were false.

If Jackson and his colleagues on the State’s new Task Force have it their way, they will not only enforce new unconstitutional and illegal laws that strip power away from, completely circumvent, and render obsolete school boards (Asm. Corey Jackson (D-Distr. 60, Riverside), AB 1078) and otherwise unconstitutionally penalize and oust non-conforming members (Asm. Mia Bonta (D-Distr. 18, Oakland), AB 1352), they will “be a source of ideas and for developing and advocating for legislation on inclusive practices,” and monitoring the State’s monitoring of whatever boards are left.

According to EdSource:

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and legislators on a new task force on inclusive education extracted commitments Wednesday from publishers and vowed more oversight with potential penalties on school boards that resist state policies on inclusive materials. [Emphasis added].

Because nothing says not totalitarian authoritarianism than extracting agreement under threat of extreme, severe, and crippling oversight and penalties!

Thurmond, task force members and speakers Wednesday said they’d favor more state oversight of school districts to prevent actions like that of the Temecula Valley Unified board. [Emphasis added].

So there you have it: they are coming after you.

WHAT TO DO NOW?

I get it is the holiday weekend, but (1) the hearing on AB 1078 is set for Wednesday, July 5, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Senate Education Committee, and (2) we have the luxury of lobbying from our couches – wherever those may be for the next few days – so let’s do it:

  1. Check out our FLTJ AB1078 OPPOSITION TOOLKIT.
    1. Note: our IT / Web Master is gone until 7/5, so I linked all of our resources on the main RESOURCES page, rather than in the Toolkit because I do not know how to do that « big grin smile emoji »

  2. Call and email Jackson and leave a vm: (1) ask him why he is doing this, why did he undo the agreed-upon amendment that got his Bill out of its originating house, why he’s secretly expediting the hearing on this Bill if he is so comfortable with it, and why doesn’t he just pull it and save everyone the time and energy of having to come up there in person to kill it; (2) ask him to pull his bill, and (3) register your opposition:
