a side of advocacy:

TOMORROW (or today, depending on when you read this) the following bills – the 2 bad and the 1 good – are set to be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee:

  • SB14 (Grove): Serious felonies: human trafficking – SUPPORT! – will make human trafficking of a minor a serious felony that is subject to “Three Strikes Law” and ensures offenders cannot plea bargain charges down, or avail themselves of “social justice credits,” e.g. “good behavior.”
  • SB407 (Wiener): Foster Care – OPPOSE – must affirm foster child’s gender identity or otherwise be excluded from fostering.
    • If passes Assembly Appropriations, will go to Assembly Floor. If SB407 passes off the Assembly Floor, it will head to Governor’s desk for review.
  • SB596 (Portantino): School employees: protection – OPPOSE – any “adult” who subjects a school employee to “harassment or… credible treat” while employee is away from school “for reasons related to the employee’s course of duties” will be guilty of a misdemeanor and fined up to $1,000.00 and/or jailed for up 1 one year for the first offense, with punishment escalating per offense. “Harassment” = “alarms, torments or terrorizes… that serves no legitimate purpose” You know, like the regular law already says.
    • If SB596 passes out of Assembly Appropriations and off the Assembly Floor, it will go back to the Senate Floor for a consent vote because it was amended since leaving the Senate.
